Rabbit Island, Okunoshima

Okunoshima, a small island floating in the Seto Inland Sea with a circumference of about 4 km, is commonly known as 'Rabbit Island' due to its population of approximately 600 wild rabbits. From the moment you set foot on the island, you are greeted by these adorable rabbits, providing an extraordinary experience. Additionally, the island offers beautiful views characteristic of a national park, opportunities for cycling, and a tour of the ruins that convey the history of its former poison gas factory, all of which are condensed into a variety of attractions.

A sound collector designed to resemble rabbit ears, installed by the sea. When you put your head inside the ears, you can have a unique experience of hearing the gentle sounds of the Seto Inland Sea waves and the wind. Its cuteness also makes it popular as a photo spot.
Okunoshima Island Resort
is the only accommodation on the island, serving as a central facility for tourism where you can enjoy meals and hot springs. The vast grassy area is also a perfect spot for interacting with rabbits, and you can taste souvenirs themed around rabbits as well as unique local soft serve ice cream.
The Hiyokko Observatory
is a spectacular spot where you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the calm Seto Inland Sea and its beautiful islands. On clear days, you can see as far as the Shikoku mountain range. It is a place where you can refresh both your mind and body while feeling the expanse of the entire island.
The ruins of the power plant
Okunoshima Island is a place that conveys the history of being called "the island erased from the map" due to the production of chemical weapons in the past. The island still has remnants of the power plant covered in vines, artillery positions, and gas storage facilities, preserving the traces of that time.

Arrived at Okunoshima by ferry at 10:30.

The moment you disembark from the ship, you are greeted by adorable rabbits. Since there is no food for sale on the island, it is recommended to purchase it at the ferry terminal in 'Chūnami Port'.

The 'Rabbit Ear Sound Collector' located next to the first pier is one of the top photo spots on the island. When you put your head into the large ears, the sounds of the wind and the gentle waves of the sea resonate pleasantly, providing a unique experience as if you have become a rabbit. Capture a playful moment at the beginning of your journey.

10:50 Learn about the history of Okunoshima at the Poison Gas Museum.

This is a museum that conveys the history of chemical weapon production that once took place on Okunoshima Island. Inside the museum, photographs and equipment documenting the manufacturing methods of that time are on display. By engaging with this past history, one can deeply reconsider the value of peace. (Admission fee: 150 yen for adults)

12:00 Lunch at 'Restaurant USANCHU'.

Lunch is enjoyed at the only restaurant on Okunoshima Island, "Kyukamura Okunoshima," featuring set meals made with local specialties from Hiroshima. The local soft serve ice cream available at the adjacent café is also a perfect treat after the meal.

"Kyukamura Okunoshima" also offers bicycle rentals, allowing you to circle the island in about 30 to 40 minutes.

Throughout the island, remnants of wartime structures quietly remain. You can feel the depth of history through sites such as the vine-covered remains of a power plant, an ammunition depot, and a gas storage facility.

4:00 PM ferry to the mainland.

As dusk approaches, I take the ferry back to the mainland. With the warm healing and lessons I gained on the island in my heart, I embark on my journey home with a pleasant sense of fulfillment.
