About the hotel streets
Hakodate, one of the first international trade ports opened in Japan in 1859 along with Yokohama and Nagasaki, features a cityscape where Western culture and Japanese tradition blend together. In particular, the western district is lined with Western-style buildings constructed from the Meiji to early Showa periods, such as the red brick warehouse complex and the former Hakodate City Public Hall. Around the hotel, cobblestone slopes and picturesque streets overlooking the port spread out, allowing visitors to experience Hakodate's history and culture through leisurely walks.
In 2023, it received the "26th Hakodate City Urban Landscape Award (Architecture Division)." The hotel, which has been carefully renovated from a red brick warehouse built during the Meiji era, is highly regarded for its dignified appearance and the charm typical of a port town, harmonizing naturally with the historic streets while enhancing the appeal of the city's landscape.
What is the Hakodate City Landscape Award
The Hakodate City Landscape Award is a recognition system organized by the city of Hakodate that honors buildings and urban development activities contributing to excellent landscape formation within the city. It targets cases that have contributed to the preservation and utilization of historical buildings, designs that leverage regional characteristics, and harmony with the landscape, all aimed at maintaining and enhancing the attractive urban landscape of Hakodate.
About Handmade MAP
At our hotel, we provide a handmade map created by our staff at the front desk. The Bay Area, featuring modern buildings and facilities such as the Red Brick Warehouse, is bustling with activity, while the Motomachi area, home to the Hakodate Holy Resurrection Church—selected as one of Japan's 100 Soundscapes—offers a solemn atmosphere with its lined-up churches. We have compiled recommended spots from these two areas with different atmospheres. Additionally, we are happy to suggest other recommended spots tailored to your travel purposes, so please feel free to ask our staff.
