Overview of the experience

From Tentokuin Treasure Hall to Sanbutsuji Main Hall

The starting point for the mountain climb is the "Tentokuin Treasure Hall," which narrates the history of Mt. Mitokusan. Visitors can appreciate the group of Important Cultural Property statues and temple treasures, tracing the contours of the spirituality that resides in this place. Listening to the clear tones of the "Suikinkutsu" echoing in the quiet temple grounds, one proceeds to the main hall of Sanbutsu-ji. As one walks along the path enveloped in deep greenery, the tranquility of this sacred site of mountain worship deepens.

Monjudo Hall, Shorodo Hall and Sky Corridor

As the serious climbing begins, the imposing 'Monjudo Hall', which embraces a giant rock, comes into view. Built to jut out over a cliff, the stage has no railings around it, and below lies the primeval forest of Mt. Mitokusan. Further ahead is the substantial wooden structure known as 'Shorodo Hall'. Here, one can feel the breath of the mountain growing more rugged with each increase in elevation, accompanied by the sound of bells echoing through the mountains.

Standing on a vertical rock wall, National Treasure "Nageiredo"

Following the chains and grasping the roots of trees, one arrives at the final destination. Inside a vertically steep rock cave, the National Treasure "Nageiredo" stands as if floating in mid-air. This architecture, which is said to have been thrown in by magical powers during the Heian period, has transcended over 1000 years and continues to coexist with the harsh natural environment. In the unbroken silence, time flows as one confronts its rare and beautiful form.
