"From April 1st, Mitokusan will be open for climbing and worship at the National Treasure 'Nōnyūdō'."

The sacred site of Mitokusan in Misasa Town, Tottori Prefecture, has welcomed the opening of the mountain on April 1st, and the path for spiritual training to closely admire the National Treasure 'Nōnyūdō' has been reopened. As spring arrives, why not experience a refreshing spiritual training in the vibrant greenery of Mitokusan?

What is Mount Santo?

Mount Sanbutsu, at an elevation of about 900 meters, is entirely within the grounds of Sanbutsu-ji temple and has been preserved as a site for ascetic training in the Shugendo tradition since ancient times. The 'Nōdō,' built in a recess of a steep cliff, is shrouded in mystery regarding its origins and is said to be 'the most dangerous National Treasure in Japan.'

A mountaineering experience that sharpens the mind and body.

The process of climbing steep rocky areas and slopes covered with roots is itself part of the Shugendo training known as 'Rokkon Shojo' (purification of the six senses). By concentrating on each step, one can forget the distractions of daily life and experience a special sensation of purification of the mind and body, accompanied by a sense of accomplishment.

Mountain climbing route and required time

This is a round trip course from the trailhead behind the main hall to the National Treasure 'Tōnyūdō'. The round trip takes about 2 to 3 hours, depending on physical fitness and the duration of stay at each spot.

The journey is very steep and there are several difficult sections that come with risks. To ensure a safe climb and to gain a deeper understanding of history and nature, we recommend accompanying a certified guide.

After descending the mountain, I recommend lunch at "Tanikawa Tengu-do" located at the end of the approach. The dishes, made abundantly with fresh mountain vegetables and wild plants harvested locally, will deeply nourish your body after the training.
