About Yame lanterns

Yame lanterns are traditional crafts with a history of about 200 years in Yame. It is characterized by a framework made from a single bamboo stick, called "Ichijo spiral style," which is wound in a spiral shape, and the beautiful fire bags directly painted with plants and landscapes. Since Yame has historically been a production area for bamboo and washi paper, it has become a representative region for lanterns in Japan. Today, various lanterns are being created to match modern lifestyles while the techniques continue to be passed down.

The Yame Chochin A traditional craft with over two centuries of history. It features a unique frame made from a single, continuously coiled bamboo strip—a technique known as ichijo rasen-shiki—and a delicate shade directly painted with natural landscapes and flora. Blessed with an abundance of bamboo and Japanese paper (washi), Yame naturally evolved into one of Japan's leading lantern-producing regions. Today, this living heritage is carried forward by local artisans, gracefully adapting the craft to modern sensibilities.
